About the Founder

Dr. Aravind Venkatesh Sreedharan is a paediatric endocrinologist dedicated to empowering parents with clear, actionable insights into their child's health. With extensive experience at KK Women's & Children's Hospital and a strong foundation in digital health and clinical leadership, he has seen first-hand how early detection and timely guidance can transform a child's growth, health and wellbeing.

Driven by this belief, he founded MapMyKidz to bring personalised, intuitive, and data-driven health support directly to families. His vision is simple: to make every child's health journey visible, understandable, and proactively managed—so parents feel confident, informed, and supported at every step.

How Growth Assessment Works

CDC and WHO Growth Standards

MapMyKidz uses internationally recognized growth standards for three key measurements:

  • Length/Height-for-age: WHO standards and CDC charts
  • Weight-for-age: WHO standards and CDC charts
  • Nutritional Status: Weight-for-length and BMI

LMS Method

We use the LMS (Lambda-Mu-Sigma) method for precise calculations:

  • L (Lambda): Skewness parameter
  • M (Mu): Mean value
  • S (Sigma): Coefficient of variation

Length/Height-for-Age Measurements

Length/Height-for-age charts track how your child's measurements compare to other children of the same age and gender:

  • WHO Length-for-age (0-2 years): Based on healthy, breastfed children from diverse populations
  • CDC Height-for-age (2-20 years): Based on large-scale surveys of US children

Mid-Parental Height Calculation

Estimates your child's expected adult height based on parental heights:

  • Boys: (Mother's height + Father's height + 13 cm) ÷ 2
  • Girls: (Mother's height + Father's height - 13 cm) ÷ 2

Weight-for-Age Measurements

Weight-for-age charts track how your child's weight compares to other children of the same age and gender:

  • WHO Weight-for-age (0-2 years): Based on healthy, breastfed children from diverse populations
  • CDC Weight-for-age (2-20 years): Based on large-scale surveys of US children

Nutritional Status Analysis

For children 0-2 years, we use weight-for-length (WFL) measurements. For children 2-20 years, we use Body Mass Index (BMI):

  • Weight-for-length (0-2 years): WHO standards for healthy growth assessment
  • BMI Formula (2-20 years): BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
  • CDC BMI-for-age (2-20 years): Charts for monitoring body composition

Interpreting Results

Length/Height Interpretation

Length/Height percentiles show how your child's measurements compare to other children of the same age and gender:

Above 90th percentile
Tall (top 10%)
10th-90th percentile
Normal range (80% of children)
3rd-10th percentile
Below average but normal
Below 3rd percentile
May indicate short stature

Mid-Parental Height (MPH) Target Ranges (2-20 years)

For children 2 years and older, we calculate target height ranges based on your child's genetic potential (mid-parental height):

Target Range
Normal growth within genetic potential.
Outside Target Range
Recommend to see a pediatric endocrinologist.

Weight Interpretation

Weight percentiles indicate if your child is underweight, normal weight, or overweight for their age:

Above 95th percentile
May indicate overweight
10th-90th percentile
Normal weight range
5th-10th percentile
Below average but normal
Below 5th percentile
May indicate underweight

BMI Interpretation

BMI percentiles measure body composition relative to height and age:

Above 95th percentile
May indicate obesity
85th-95th percentile
May indicate overweight
5th-85th percentile
Normal BMI range
Below 5th percentile
May indicate underweight

Z-Scores

Z-scores show how many standard deviations your child's measurements are from the mean. They're particularly useful for extreme values (below 3rd percentile) and provide more precise measurements than percentiles alone for height, weight, and BMI.

INTERGROWTH-21st Growth Standards

The INTERGROWTH-21st Project was a multi-centre, multi-ethnic, population-based project, conducted between 2009 and 2014, in eight demarcated urban areas: Pelotas, Brazil; Shunyi County, Beijing, China; Central Nagpur, India; Turin, Italy; Parklands Suburb, Nairobi, Kenya; Muscat, Oman; Oxford, UK, and Seattle, USA.

Its primary aim was to study growth, health, nutrition and neurodevelopment from less than 14 weeks of gestation to 2 years of age, using the same conceptual framework as the WHO Multicentre Growth Reference Study, so as to produce international prescriptive standards for pregnancy dating, maternal weight gain, fetal growth, newborn size, the postnatal growth of preterm infants and cognitive development at 2 years of age.

These scientifically robust clinical tools may be used to monitor and evaluate maternal and fetal wellbeing, as well as infant health and nutrition at an individual and population level.
